Spokes and Dreams
A wonderful time was enjoyed at the Spokes and Dreams FUNdraising Gala Dinner on Saturday 8th Oct – but the fundraising doesn’t stop there. Read on to see how you can help.
What are we fundraising for?
Do you remember your first bike? Most of us have fond memories of a new or a new to us bike, and a few of us will even have scars from the many tumbles taken in learning to ride. As adults, we understand that owning and regularly riding a bike is great for our health, both physical and mental.
On a recent trip to Cape Verde, Dave discovered that many of the children and young adults were without bikes. School buses aren’t running due to the fuel situation so many kids have had their education put on hold.
So we thought this would be a great opportunity to help support the children and young adults of Cape Verde.
We are also collecting suitable donations of such as children / teen bikes, inner tubes, tyre levers, pumps, helmets, lights to accompany those bought with funds raised.
Why do they need help?
The children and young adults on Cape Verde love cycling – the problem is that there are simply not enough bikes on the islands to satisfy the need as everything has to be imported into the country.
With exorbitant increase in fuel, children are looking to cycling as a way to get to school. For young adults it offers them the ability to get to work.
As we are all aware, being able to have and use a bike is great for our health, both physical and mental. Plus offers children the opportunity to learn cycle maintenance skills alongside developing their physical cycling skills.
There is a new Cape Verde Cycle Federation who have asked Dave for voluntary assistance to create a cycling structure and performance programme.
How can I help?
1) Donate a bike
It’s not just new bikes we are looking for. Our friends at Decathlon, Southampton have agreed to be a drop-off point should you have any bicycles (childrens or adults) in good working order you’d like to donate.
2) Donate on the fundraising page
If you’d like to donate cash then please do so via our fundraising page.
“I enjoy training with Team Savage as much now as when I joined 5 years ago. Dave and his team of coaches are experts in their fields and bring out the best in me and I have full confidence in them in helping me achieve my aims under their guidance.
My confidence has grown enormously as my fitness, social circle and knowledge”
